Duncan's Gate

Standing at the edge of Colchester, Duncan's Gate is a proper slice of medieval Essex that most people drive past without noticing. It's essentially the remains of a gatehouse from the town's old fortifications - substantial enough to feel genuinely old, but weathered enough that you need to use your imagination a bit to picture what it once controlled.

Historically minded visitors will get the most from this one. It's the sort of place that rewards a quick stop rather than a planned afternoon - fifteen minutes to have a look, read the information board, and contemplate how much of the medieval town has simply vanished. The stonework is impressive if you're into that sort of architecture, and the sheer age of it (we're talking proper centuries here) does make you pause.

It's genuinely free to visit, which is the main appeal. No opening hours to worry about, no admission fee - just turn up and have a look. The location means it works well if you're based at one of the nearby parks like Colchester Country Park or Ardleigh Caravan & Camping Park, both within a few miles. Slip it in as a quick detour while you're exploring Colchester itself.

That said, it's not a family draw and it won't occupy kids for long. Go if medieval history genuinely interests you, or if you're doing a proper tour of Colchester's heritage. Otherwise, it's bit thin for a dedicated journey.
