Duncangill Head

The walk up to Duncangill Head rewards you with one of the best views across the South Lanarkshire hills - assuming the weather cooperates. From Biggar, this moorland peak rises to just over 400 metres, making it an accessible climb even for families who don't fancy anything too technical.

The route itself takes roughly ninety minutes to two hours depending on your pace and how often you stop for photos. You'll pass through open moorland with hardly another soul about, which is precisely why locals keep quiet about it. The summit offers proper panoramic views across the Lowlands towards the Pentlands on a clear day - genuinely cracking stuff.

It's free to walk, naturally. Wear decent boots though; the ground gets boggy after rain, and the wind can pick up quickly at the top. Spring through autumn is your best bet weather-wise, though winter climbs are possible if you're confident in your footing.

If you're basing yourself at Mount View Caravan Park, just a few miles away near Biggar, Duncangill Head makes an excellent morning outing before lunch.
