Dunan, dun site

The ruins of Dunan sit on a hillside overlooking the Firth of Clyde, and honestly, you won't find much left to get excited about - a few earthworks, some stone foundations, the general sense that something important happened here centuries ago. What makes it worth the walk, though, is the view and the effort of actually getting there. You're looking at an Iron Age fortified site, probably built around the 1st century BC, which would've had proper strategic value controlling the water route below. The walk from Dunoon takes you through decent countryside, and you get a real sense of why the ancient inhabitants chose this spot.

It's not a destination that'll keep you occupied for hours. Most people spend thirty minutes poking around the earthworks, taking photos of the view, then heading back down. That said, if you're into prehistory or Scottish archaeology, the isolation and the fact you've gone to the trouble of finding it makes the experience feel more genuine than visiting a fully excavated and manicured site. No facilities, no interpretation boards - just you and the landscape. The views across the Firth are genuinely excellent, especially on clear days when you can see across to Bute.
