Dunan Charmaic, dun site

The walk to Dunan Charmaic feels properly remote, even by Islay standards. This Iron Age dun - essentially a fortified settlement - sits on the peninsula between Loch Gruinart and Loch Indaal, and you'll need decent boots and a decent chunk of time to reach it. The ruins themselves are modest: stone walls rising maybe waist-high, scattered across rough moorland. But that's precisely the appeal. There's no queue, no visitor centre, no gift shop. Just you, the wind, and 2,000 years of silence.

The site works best for walkers with an interest in Scottish archaeology rather than casual day-trippers expecting dramatic reconstruction work. You won't find much interpretation on the ground - come armed with a guidebook or local knowledge. Allow a solid two hours minimum for the walk from wherever you've parked, plus time at the site itself. The views across the lochs are genuinely stirring, particularly on clearer days.

Go outside peak tourist season - summer midges are relentless out here. Free to visit, naturally, being little more than exposed foundations. Bring a map though. Mobile signal is patchy at best.
