Dunan Buidhe, dun site

A crumbling Iron Age fort on the Isle of Islay, Dunan Buidhe sits on a headland with views across the Sound of Islay - nothing flashy, but genuinely atmospheric if you're willing to put in the legwork to find it. The dun itself is basically rubble now, a tumble of stone walls that once formed a circular defensive structure. What makes it worth the visit is the setting and the sense of stumbling onto something genuinely old and quietly important.

This is one for archaeology enthusiasts and hardcore walkers rather than casual tourists. There's no visitor centre, no interpretive panels, no café - just you, the ruins, and the Scottish weather. Allow a couple of hours including the walk to reach it, depending on where you're starting from. The terrain is boggy in places and the path isn't always obvious, so proper boots are essential. Go in spring or early autumn when the midges aren't at their worst and the light is decent for photography.

Pair it with a visit to other Iron Age sites on the island or spend time at Port Askaig nearby. The Isle of Islay has more than enough to keep you occupied for a week - whisky distilleries, RSPB reserves, golden beaches - but Dunan Buidhe offers something different: a proper sense of connection to people who lived here 2,000 years ago.
