Dunamoddie

The walk up Dunamoddie takes you to one of those surprisingly rewarding hilltop vantage points that southern Ayrshire keeps a bit quiet. It's not a challenging climb - more of a steady plod through moorland with the Lowlands gradually spreading out below you - but the view from the top makes it worth the effort. On a clear day you get proper wide horizons across South Ayrshire, and the sense of being somewhere genuinely elevated even though the height isn't dramatic.

This is walker territory rather than a destination for the casual tourist. You'll want decent boots, and you'll spend a good hour or two up here if you're not rushing. There's nothing built on the summit - no cafe, no visitor centre - so pack water and come prepared. That said, the lack of facilities is precisely why it feels authentic. You're not fighting crowds or queueing for anything.

Maybole sits closest by, about six miles or so south, which gives you a reference point for planning the day. If you're based at Freedom Fields Glamping nearby, Dunamoddie slots in nicely as a morning objective before lunch. It works best in drier months when the ground underfoot isn't boggy. Summer's ideal, though autumn brings decent light too.

Not a must-do if your time is short, but if you enjoy proper walking and aren't bothered about creature comforts at the summit, it delivers the goods.
