Dun Sheallaidh, dun

The walk up to Dun Sheallaidh takes you through proper rough Highland terrain - sheep scattered about, views that just keep opening up - before you reach what's left of this Iron Age fort perched above Tarbert. It's not much to look at if you're expecting dramatic ruins, but that's partly the appeal. You're standing on an actual defensive stronghold from over two thousand years ago, with the landscape laid out below you much as it would have been then.

The dun itself is basically a circular stone structure, heavily tumbled and overgrown, which means it rewards a bit of scrambling about to work out what you're looking at. Archaeology types will find it genuinely interesting - there's real substance to what's survived - but casual visitors might spend twenty minutes and be done. It's the walk and the views that justify the trip more than the site itself.

Bring decent boots. The ground gets boggy and the path's not maintained, which keeps most tourists away and is precisely why it's worth doing. Summer's best, when the midges are manageable and you can actually see where you're stepping. Allow a couple of hours return from Tarbert for the full experience.

If you're staying at Killegruer Caravan Site just half a mile away, this is an obvious morning out - it's close enough for a reasonable walk without being a major expedition. Muasdale Holiday Park, three miles on, gives you a bit more flexibility for day trips around the Kintyre peninsula.
