Dun Mhic Choigil, dun site

The Iron Age fort sits on a rocky outcrop above Tarbert, commanding views across Loch Fyne that haven't changed much in two thousand years. What you're looking at are the tumbled stones of what was once a proper defensive position - multiple concentric walls, though you need to know what you're looking for to read the archaeology on the ground.

This is one for the historically minded rather than casual strollers. The walk up takes twenty minutes from the village, and the site itself rewards closer inspection if you've got decent OS map knowledge or you're interested in how Iron Age communities fortified their settlements. The views alone make the scramble worthwhile - Tarbert sits below, and on clear days you can trace the loch for miles.

It's free, obviously - archaeological sites in Scotland generally are - and you can visit any time. The ground can be boggy after rain, so proper boots matter. Allow an hour if you're going to poke around properly and soak in the view rather than tick the box.

Stay at Killegruer Caravan Site just three miles away and you've got easy access to this and the wider Argyll landscape. The site itself is small and undeveloped, which means you're doing genuine landscape archaeology rather than walking around interpretation boards. That's either exactly what you want or not your thing at all.
