Dun Mac Tual

Dun Mac Tual is a Pictish hill fort sitting above Pitlochry, and honestly, you'll need proper legs to reach it. The walk up from the car park takes a solid hour through woodland, climbing steadily through Scottish landscape that only gets better the higher you go. Once you're there - and you will know when you've arrived - you're standing in the remains of an Iron Age or early medieval settlement, with the Tummel Valley spreading out below. The fort itself is marked by defensive earthworks and stone remains, though there's not much interpretation on site, so bringing a guidebook helps.

This isn't a quick tick-off. History types and serious walkers get the most from it, and you need decent footwear and time. If you've got young children expecting something flashy, they'll lose interest once the novelty of "old rocks" wears off after twenty minutes. The payoff, though, is solitude and views that remind you why people built forts up here in the first place.

It's free to visit, and worth combining with a broader Pitlochry hike rather than a standalone trip. If you're camped at Glengoulandie or staying at Pitilie Pods nearby, it's a proper day out. The caravanning crowd at Glengoulandie would get decent value from the walk, and the views alone justify the effort. Go early or midweek to avoid whatever weekend foot traffic exists.
