Dun Law

The walk up Dun Law from Biggar is a proper lung-buster, but the views across the Lowlands make every stair-step worth it. You're looking at around 1,000 feet of elevation gain over a couple of hours, so bring water and decent boots. The summit itself isn't dramatic - no jagged rocks or sheer drops - but on a clear day you get sweeping views of farmland rolling toward the Southern Uplands. Walkers absolutely get the most out of this one. It's the kind of hill that families with older kids (10 plus) can tackle without too much moaning, though younger children might find the slog tedious.

There's no visitor centre or facilities at the top, so pack accordingly. The walk is free, naturally, and you can start from various points around Biggar depending on how much punishment you want to inflict on yourself. Best visited spring through autumn when the weather's halfway cooperative - midwinter can be bleak and muddy. Allow three to four hours for the full loop if you want to do it properly and not feel rushed.

If you're based at Mount View Caravan Park nearby, Dun Law makes a solid half-day outing, especially if you're after actual exercise rather than a gentle meander. It's the kind of walk that clears your head properly. Not Instagram-worthy, but genuinely satisfying.
