Dun Fhinn, dun site

The remains of Dun Fhinn sit on a hillside above Tarbert, quiet and largely unvisited. It's an Iron Age fortification - what archaeologists call a dun - and what you find is basically earthwork ramparts, overgrown but still distinct enough to trace the structure of the original defensive walls. You're looking at ancient settlement patterns here, not dramatic ruins, so manage your expectations accordingly.

For history types and archaeology enthusiasts, this is genuinely worthwhile. There's something quite moving about standing where people lived two thousand years ago, reading the landscape rather than a visitor centre display. The location itself is strategic - you can see why they chose this spot overlooking the water. It's a short walk from Tarbert town itself, which means you can combine it with exploring the village without eating up a full afternoon.

Families with older kids might enjoy the detective work of reading the ground, but younger children will likely find it underwhelming after ten minutes. There's no interpretation board, no facilities, nothing to do except look and imagine. Bring an OS map or a decent guidebook if you want to understand what you're looking at.

It works well as a filler during a holiday at Killegruer Caravan Site or Muasdale Holiday Park - both are within striking distance. Neither park will bore you rigid, so Dun Fhinn fits nicely as a morning ramble when the weather's decent. Access appears free and unrestricted, though it's the sort of place where you'd want to check locally before driving miles.
