Dun Bhugan, dun site

The remains of Dun Bhugan rise unexpectedly from the landscape near Taynuilt, a proper Iron Age fort that's been holding its ground here for roughly two thousand years. You're looking at what's left of a circular stone structure - walls still substantial enough to give you a real sense of the scale of the thing, even if time and weather have had their way with it.

This isn't a manicured heritage site with interpretation boards and a visitor centre. It's the real deal - you turn up, you walk to it, you stand in the middle of ancient stonework. The views across to Loch Awe are genuinely worth the walk alone, but the fort itself tells you something about Iron Age life in Argyll: defensive, strategic, built to last. Walkers and archaeology enthusiasts will get far more from this than families after a quick photo stop, to be honest. You need reasonable fitness and comfortable footwear, and you'll want to allow a solid hour or so for the approach and exploration. There's no café, no facilities - bring what you need. It's free to visit, naturally, as these prehistoric monuments tend to be.
