Dun a'Bhuic, dun site

You'll find the remains of an ancient dun - a prehistoric fortified settlement - perched above Tarbert in Argyll, commanding views across the water towards Jura. What survives today is essentially a grassed-over earthwork, a low mound that marks where Iron Age inhabitants once built their defensive structure. It's not dramatic or immediately obvious; you're reading the landscape rather than gazing at towering ruins.

This is genuinely interesting territory for archaeology enthusiasts and anyone with a real interest in how people lived two thousand years ago in the Scottish Highlands. The setting itself rewards the effort - the walk up isn't punishing, and the vantage point explains why someone chose to fortify this spot in the first place. A historian could spend half an hour picking over the details; most visitors will want twenty minutes before heading back down.

It's free to visit, as with most unexcavated archaeological sites on Scottish land. There's no visitor infrastructure, so come prepared for bog and rough ground, particularly in wetter months.
