Duckreed Wood

The woodland around Battle hides some proper walking territory, and Duckreed Wood delivers the sort of forest ramble that doesn't require a map or fancy kit. It's genuine Sussex woodland - the kind with decent paths, enough canopy to feel properly enclosed, and the occasional clearing that reminds you where you are geographically.

What you're doing here is straightforward: walking through established forest, spotting whatever wildlife decides to show itself, and getting away from the flat open spaces that dominate the area. The paths are workable year-round, though winter mud can be ankle-deep. Spring's best if you want to catch bluebells and bird activity. Allow anything from 45 minutes to two hours depending on how many wrong turns you fancy.

Families with primary-school-age kids will get the most out of it - there's enough woodland theatre to keep them engaged without needing a destination or visitor centre. Teenagers might find it a bit dull. Serious hikers using Battle as a base should walk it early morning when the woods feel less tramped.

Staying at Beech Estate Campsite, just a mile away, makes sense - you're camping near decent walking, close enough to Battle itself for a pub supper, and without needing to drive far. The wood's free to access and there's no ticketing nonsense. Go in autumn if the weather holds; the colours are genuine and the paths are drier than late winter.

It's not spectacular, but it does what it says on the tin. Solid stuff.
