Drummondreach, dun site

A steep hillside near Dingwall holds the weathered remains of Drummondreach, a Iron Age fort that once commanded views across the Black Isle. What you're looking at is a dun - essentially a fortified homestead - where someone important lived roughly two thousand years ago. The site itself is basically earthwork traces: a couple of ramparts that form concentric circles around what would have been a central dwelling, all gradually being reclaimed by heather and grass.

It's the sort of place that rewards hillwalkers and archaeology enthusiasts far more than casual visitors. If you're camping at Dingwall Camping and Caravanning Club Site or staying at Highland Heights Luxury Glamping further out, it's a decent half-day outing - there's a modest walk involved to reach it, and the views back toward the Moray Firth are genuinely worth the climb. Kids might find it a bit underwhelming unless they're already keen on Iron Age history; there's no visitor centre, no interpretation boards, just you, the wind, and some lumpy grass.

Access appears to be free and unrestricted, though the track can get boggy depending on weather. Allow a couple of hours including the approach from the road. Go in decent visibility - the point of a dun was the vantage, so you want clear sightlines to appreciate what the builders were protecting. It's proper wild Highland terrain, which is exactly the appeal if that's your thing.
