Drumaness Mill Pond

The water at Drumaness sits perfectly still most days, ringed by trees that lean in as if they're curious about their own reflection. It's a proper working mill pond rather than a tourist attraction with gates and gift shops, which is partly why it's worth the short drive from Newcastle.

You can walk the perimeter easily enough - takes about thirty minutes at a gentle pace - and there's something absorbing about watching the water change colour as clouds pass overhead. The setting feels removed from things, even though you're close to town. Families won't find playground equipment or ice cream vans, which some will see as a loss and others as a relief.

It's the sort of place that appeals to people who enjoy a quiet walk without fanfare. Photographers occasionally pitch up for the morning light. Birdwatchers do better here than you'd expect. Children under eight might get restless after a circuit or two, unless they're into spotting things in the water.

If you're staying at Slieve Croob Camping, which is just over six miles away, this makes a sensible morning or late-afternoon stop before or after exploring the higher ground nearby. Bring waterproof shoes - the path can be boggy in places. No facilities to speak of, so sort yourself out in Newcastle first.

Free to visit, naturally. No set hours because there are no gates. Best avoided mid-winter when it gets genuinely grey and unwelcoming.
