Dron Hill

The walk up Dron Hill takes you across proper Perthshire moorland, and the views from the top make it worth the effort. It's not a massive peak - you're looking at a straightforward ascent that doesn't require technical kit or serious fitness - but the landscape changes as you gain height, which keeps things interesting.

From the summit, you get sightlines across Fife and towards the Tay estuary. On a clear day the visibility is decent enough to make sense of the geography around Cupar and beyond. The path itself is well-trodden but can get boggy in places, so proper boots matter more than you'd think.

This is a solid option for walkers who want a proper hill experience without the scrambling or exposure of the higher peaks. Families with kids who've got some walking experience under their belts won't struggle with it. History buffs won't find much to gnaw on - it's landscape and fresh air rather than monuments - but that's partly what makes it refreshing.

Allow yourself two hours round trip if you're not dawdling. The moorland can feel exposed and windswept, even when the weather looks decent in town, so pack a windproof. If you're camping or caravanning at South Valleyfield just down the road - members of the Caravan Club get access to the site - Dron Hill makes an easy morning outing before heading elsewhere.
