Drayton Reservoir

Water, sky, and not much else - that's the appeal of Drayton Reservoir near Daventry. It's a proper working reservoir, so don't expect manicured lakeside paths or beach facilities. What you get instead is 126 acres of open water where anglers come to catch pike and perch, and walkers do laps around the perimeter for the sheer peace of it.

The walk is flat and straightforward, taking you around the full circuit in about an hour depending on your pace. Birds nest here in good numbers - herons, grebes, the occasional osprey - so bring binoculars if you're into that sort of thing. The reservoir itself is austere, almost industrial in places, but there's something honest about that. No chocolate-box nonsense.

It's mainly a spot for anglers and serious birdwatchers rather than families after a jolly day out. Kids will get bored within twenty minutes unless they're genuinely keen on wildlife. If you're camped at EWE Glamping just down the road, it makes a decent morning stroll to work off breakfast. Steepleton Lodge and Northants Caravan Site are also close by, making this an easy add-on to a broader Northamptonshire break.

Free to access, though check locally about any seasonal restrictions given it's an active water supply. Go early for the best light and fewest people. Winter's actually lovely here - fewer visitors, better light for photography, and the water reflects everything.
