Dr. John Grigor Statue

The statue of Dr. John Grigor stands in Nairn, a modest tribute to a man who shaped the Highland town's Victorian prosperity. Grigor was the driving force behind Nairn's transformation into a fashionable seaside resort in the 1800s - he envisioned the place when it was barely more than a fishing village and somehow convinced investors and developers to back his dream.

You won't find much fanfare here. It's a straightforward bronze figure in the town centre, the kind of memorial that locals walk past without thinking twice but which rewards anyone taking a moment to pause. The inscription tells you who he was, and standing there you can almost picture the ambition required to market Nairn as Scotland's answer to southern seaside towns when transport was still a genuine undertaking.

History buffs will find this worthwhile, particularly those interested in Victorian enterprise and small-town development. It's not a destination in itself - you're looking at five minutes maximum - but if you're staying at Barrow Campsite just north of town, it's a pleasant detour while exploring Nairn's seafront and the decent stretch of beach nearby.

The statue works best as part of a broader wander through Nairn itself. The town's got reasonable facilities, a high street with proper character, and the proximity to both the Moray Firth and the wider Highlands makes it a decent base. Free to view, obviously. Go when the weather's decent enough to actually enjoy the seafront beyond just seeing the statue.
