Doric Temple

There's a proper Greek temple standing in the Sussex countryside near Pulborough, which is odd enough to stop you in your tracks. The Doric Temple is a neoclassical folly built in the 18th century - all fluted columns and pediments in the middle of farmland. It's the kind of thing that makes you wonder what Victorian landowner decided this was essential to their estate.

You'll get the most from it if you're into architectural oddities or enjoy a good walk through the South Downs. It's not a massive undertaking - perhaps 30 minutes to an hour if you've got time to poke around and take photos. The temple itself is small enough to see in one go, though the grounds and surrounding landscape reward a bit of wandering.

Historically minded visitors will appreciate the craftsmanship, though be warned: it's not exactly teeming with interpretation boards. You're largely left to admire it as a standalone curiosity.
