Dolforwyn Castle

The ruins of Dolforwyn Castle sit on a low hill overlooking the Severn Valley, about a mile north of Montgomery in Powys. It's not going to stop you in your tracks like Caernarfon or Harlech - this is a proper ruin, the kind where you need to use your imagination to picture the walls that once stood here.

Built in 1273 by Llywelyn ap Gruffydd as a statement of Welsh independence, the castle was slighted (deliberately destroyed) by Edward I within just four years. What remains are earthworks, some stone foundations, and enough to understand the layout if you're into medieval fortifications. The views across the valley are decent enough, and it's free to wander around whenever you fancy.

For history types and castle enthusiasts, this is worth the short drive from Montgomery town to see it properly - maybe thirty minutes on site if you're not rushing. Families with young children might find it less engaging than a complete castle with towers to climb, though older kids studying Medieval Wales will get something out of it. The walk up is gentle rather than demanding.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks like Smithy Park or Maes Yr Afon, it's an easy addition to a morning exploring Montgomery itself, which has far better medieval credentials with its town walls and castle remnants still visible. Don't make it your main stop, but if you're in the area, the short detour makes sense - especially on a clear day when those valley views open up.
