Dolddinas Camp III

Iron Age ramparts rise out of the moorland near Dolgellau, their earthen banks still commanding the hilltop after two thousand years. Dolddinas Camp III is one of those archaeological sites that rewards a bit of effort to find - no visitor centre, no café, just you and the landscape the ancient Welsh would have known.

The fort itself consists of concentric defensive banks, remarkably well-preserved considering the weather up here. You can walk the perimeter and actually feel the defensive logic of the placement - good sightlines across the valley, defensible terrain. It's the sort of site that appeals most to walkers and history types willing to do their own interpretation rather than follow a prescribed route.

Getting there means a proper trek from Dolgellau, likely on moorland tracks, so allow a solid half-day if you're going to do it justice and actually explore the ramparts rather than just glimpse them. There's no admission charge because there's no infrastructure, which keeps it raw and genuine but also means going in winter means battling mud and wind.

If you're basing yourself at Llechwedd Glamping at Plas Weunydd down in the valley, Dolddinas makes a credible morning excursion combined with lower-level walking elsewhere in Snowdonia. Not a destination in itself, but a worthwhile detour if Bronze Age settlements scratch your itch and you're the sort who enjoys a bit of moorland solitude.
