Dolau Beach

Walking down the cliff path from New Quay, you'll spot this crescent of shingle and sand tucked between rocky outcrops. Dolau Beach feels properly secluded - the sort of spot where you might have the waves to yourself, especially outside the summer months.

Families with young children might find the access a bit challenging, as the path down isn't the easiest with pushchairs or heavy beach kit. But for those who make the effort, it's a lovely reward. The beach faces west, making it brilliant for evening light if you're camping nearby at places like Haven Quay West or Ocean Heights Leisure Park.

Rock pooling at low tide keeps kids occupied for ages, and the sheltered position means it's often calmer than the more exposed beaches along this stretch of Ceredigion coast. Dog walkers particularly rate this spot - plenty of space for a proper run around.

Timing matters here. High tide swallows much of the beach, so check before you trek down. The best approach is to combine it with a coastal walk from New Quay, perhaps grabbing lunch in town afterwards. It's the kind of beach that rewards the curious rather than those wanting deck chairs and ice cream vans.
