Doglow Wood

Doglow Wood is a proper woodland walk just outside Ashbourne - the sort of place locals know about but rarely make it onto the postcard circuit. It's mixed deciduous forest with decent paths cutting through, giving you that genuine sense of being away from things without needing a two-hour drive to get there.

The main appeal is straightforward: woodland, peace, and enough variation in the terrain to keep legs engaged without being punishing. You're walking through beech and oak, with seasonal changes doing most of the heavy lifting - bluebells in spring, that golden hour light through the canopy in autumn. It's the kind of walk that works equally well for families wanting to let kids burn energy and for anyone after a proper leg-stretch without the Peak District crowds.

The nearest town is Ashbourne, which sits about 10 minutes away by car, so you can loop a visit in with other Derbyshire stuff easily enough. If you're camped at Carsington Water Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite or Carsington Fields - both less than three miles away - this makes an effortless morning before you head somewhere else. Same goes for Mulino Lodge or Poplars Farm if you're glamping.

Be realistic about time though - this isn't a full-day commitment. Two hours gets you round comfortably, maybe three if you dawdle. Go when it's not properly chucking it down, and wear boots because the ground stays damp even when it's not raining. Proper woodland sense, minimal faffing about.
