Dog Kennel Pond

A modest stretch of water on the edge of Rotherham, Dog Kennel Pond is the sort of place locals know about but visitors often walk straight past. It's good for a quiet spell, particularly if you're camped at one of the nearby parks and fancy a break from the caravan.

The pond itself is pretty small - you can walk around it in twenty minutes without rushing. There's a path that loops the perimeter, which makes it accessible even for families with young kids or anyone not keen on serious hiking. The water's usually calm, and you'll spot waterfowl mucking about depending on the season. It's not dramatic, but it's pleasant enough on a decent day.

This works best as a leg-stretch rather than a destination in itself. If you're staying at Hooton Lodge Farm or Greensprings Caravan Park - both solid options for South Yorkshire holidays - Dog Kennel Pond is close enough for a morning wander before heading somewhere with more going on. Birdwatchers might find it worthwhile earlier in the day when it's quieter. Take a pair of binoculars if you're that way inclined.

Free to visit, no facilities that I could see, so bring a drink. The Rotherham area has proper parks and attractions if you want something grander, but if you just need to get outside for half an hour without overthinking it, this does the job.
