Doe Park Reservoir

Water stretches out between steep moorland slopes just outside Bingley, and Doe Park Reservoir is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for. It's a working reservoir - no swimming, no paddling - but the walk around it is genuinely lovely, especially if you're staying at Upwood Holiday Park nearby. The path takes you past the dam and along the water's edge with proper views across to the hills beyond. On a clear day it's atmospheric. On a grey one, frankly, it's a bit bleak.

The walk itself is straightforward and takes about 45 minutes at a decent pace. It's flat enough for families, though pushchairs might struggle on muddier stretches. If you've got kids under eight, they'll probably get restless - there's nothing interactive here, just you and the water. Walkers and photographers will find more to linger over, especially in autumn when the light hits the surrounding moorland properly.

It won't cost you anything. The reservoir just sits there, free to wander around. Combine it with a stay at one of the holiday parks in the area - Woodsworth Exploring is worth considering too - and you've got a decent half-day out that doesn't demand much planning. It's the sort of place that feels like a proper local secret, which is precisely why it's worth the visit if you're in the Bingley area.
