Dod Hill

Dod Hill isn't the sort of peak that'll set your heart racing, but that's rather the point. It's a modest climb above Biggar in South Lanarkshire - the sort of walk you can knock out in an afternoon without needing to pack a rope and a survival kit. The view from the top sweeps across the Scottish Lowlands, rolling fields and distant hills, nothing dramatic but proper restful.

The walk itself takes about ninety minutes to the summit and back, depending on your pace. It's straightforward rather than technical, which makes it popular with families and older walkers who want a proper hill without the scrambling. You'll get your legs working but you won't feel battered at the end. The path is reasonably maintained, though it can be muddy after rain.

Peaks like this work well if you're based at Mount View Caravan Park nearby - it's close enough for a morning or afternoon outing without eating your whole day. Go early if the weather looks uncertain; clouds roll in quickly in the Lowlands and you'll lose the views entirely. The surrounding country is quiet and green, which is exactly what draws people here rather than chasing the more famous Cairngorms further north.

It's not spectacular. It's honest. If you want a modest, achievable hillwalk and you're staying in the area, Dod Hill delivers without pretension. Solo walkers and small groups get the most from it; it's not the sort of place that impresses for the sake of impressing.
