What you're looking at is the Victorian-era work of a local physician who clearly had more than a passing interest in horticulture - the grounds show real care and thoughtful planting, even if they're not the showiest gardens you'll encounter.

The scale means you won't spend half a day, but that's rather the point - it's the sort of place you visit because you're curious about local history, not because you've cleared your diary.

If you're camped at one of the nearby parks - Fernwood Glamping or Ashley Heath are closest - it makes an easy morning detour before heading deeper into the New Forest. Oakdene and Forest Edge are also within striking distance if you're based there.
