Dùn Coillich

The walk up Dùn Coillich from Pitlochry is one of those climbs that rewards you properly. It's not a brutal slog - more of a steady plod through proper Scottish woodland before the views open up across the Tummel Valley. The peak itself sits at a decent height without being Alpine, and on a clear day you get the full sweep of Perthshire spread out below. The name means "cuckoo hill" in Gaelic, though I didn't hear any birds the day I went.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's roughly two hours up and back from Pitlochry town centre if you're moving at a decent pace, so it's not a whole-day commitment - ideal if you've only got an afternoon free. The path is well-trodden but can be muddy after rain, so decent boots are worth packing.

Historically minded types will appreciate the Highland atmosphere, though don't expect ruins or ancient stones at the summit itself. The landscape speaks louder than any plaques do.

If you're staying at Glengoulandie or Parkdean's Tummel Valley site - both cracking spots for caravanning and camping - this makes a brilliant leg-stretcher. Both parks are within easy striking distance, which means you can have a proper morning hike without needing to trek miles from your pitch. It's the sort of walk that keeps kids interested without being too demanding for younger legs either.
