Disgwylfa Fâch

The walk up Disgwylfa Fâch is one of those proper little climbs that rewards you without requiring mountaineering skills. You're looking at a modest peak just inland from Aberystwyth, the kind of place locals actually use rather than tourists stampeding through with selfie sticks.

It's a straightforward ascent through Welsh countryside - fields, scrub, and enough of an incline to get your heart going for twenty minutes or so. The view from the top sweeps across Cardigan Bay and back toward the town. On a clear day you can see for miles. On a grey day, which is often, it's moody and dramatic in that way West Wales does so well.

Walkers will get genuine value from this. Families with kids aged eight or up won't find it tedious, though toddlers might struggle with the terrain. The whole thing takes under an hour from start to finish, so it slots nicely into a morning before heading down to Aberystwyth for lunch. It's free, naturally - it's a mountain.

If you're based at one of the nearby campsites like Aber Camping or Forester's Retreat Glamping, Disgwylfa Fâch makes an excellent day hike without the faffing about of driving somewhere else. Tyn Ffordd Fach is even closer. There's nothing fancy at the summit - no tearoom, no trig point drama - but that's rather the point. Go early morning when the light's good and you've got the place to yourself.
