Dingwall Thing Site

Walk to the top of a grassy mound in Dingwall and you're standing where Viking leaders once gathered to settle disputes and make laws. The Thing Site is Scotland's oldest parliament, basically - though calling it a 'site' might oversell what's actually here. There's no visitor centre, no interpretation boards, just a raised piece of ground with views across the town. That said, if you know what you're looking at, it's properly atmospheric.

History buffs will get a kick out of it. The Viking Thing tradition was about as democratic as medieval governance got - free men would gather in the open to hear cases and make decisions. Dingwall's version operated from around the 9th century onwards, which is genuinely old. For walkers, it's barely a detour if you're exploring the town itself, maybe twenty minutes up and back from the high street.

Kids might find it underwhelming unless you're good at painting vivid pictures of what once happened here. There's no playground, no interactive elements - just you and a bump in the landscape. But if you're staying at Dingwall Camping and Caravanning Club Site right on the doorstep, or fancied a longer walk from Highland Heights Glamping up the road, it's worth the leg stretch. Free to visit, open whenever.

Give it an hour if you're thorough. Combine it with a proper walk around Dingwall itself, which has more to offer than most small Highland towns.
