Dinas Fawr

The walk up Dinas Fawr from Pwllheli is properly rewarding - a steep climb that takes the best part of an hour, but the views across the Llyn Peninsula make every step worthwhile. You're looking down at the coast, inland towards Snowdonia on a clear day, and the whole sweep of Cardigan Bay opening out below you. The peak itself isn't dramatic - no dramatic rock formations or sudden drop-offs - but that's almost the point. It's a working landscape, not a showpiece, and you get a real sense of being somewhere real rather than packaged for tourists.

Walkers will get the most from this one. The climb is steady and leg-burning rather than technical, so anyone reasonably fit can manage it, but it's not the sort of thing to haul reluctant children up unless they're keen outdoors types already. The route can be muddy and slippery in wet weather, so good boots matter. Allow two to three hours for the round trip depending on fitness.

If you're staying at Glampio Coed or Tyn Ddol - both excellent spots within three miles of Pwllheli - Dinas Fawr makes a proper morning outing. Start early to avoid the afternoon crowds and bag decent light for photographs. The nearby beaches and coastal paths mean you can easily string together a full day's walking from your base without feeling like you're doing the obvious tourist circuit. It's the kind of peak that rewards the effort without demanding it be a expedition.
