Walking in, you're stepping into the studio where she pioneered portrait photography and experimental technique - the rooms still feel like a working creative space rather than a sterile museum.

The galleries display her original prints and glass plates alongside contemporary work that responds to her legacy. It's not massive, which works in its favour. You can properly absorb what's here in an hour without feeling rushed or overwhelmed. The house itself tells the story as much as the displays do - you get a real sense of how she worked, lived, and pushed boundaries in an era when women photographers were virtually unheard of.

It works well for anyone with a genuine interest in photography history or Victorian domestic life. If you're expecting blockbuster exhibitions and a gift shop selling everything under the sun, you'll be disappointed. This is intimate and specialist.

Freshwater's a short drive away, and if you're based at one of the nearby parks - Tapnell Farm or The Bay Colwell are within a couple of miles - it makes a decent half-day excursion. Combine it with a walk along the coastal paths in the area, which are proper fine. Worth ringing ahead to check opening times and whether there's an entry fee, as details weren't clear.
