Backet's Copse

Dense woodland cloaks this small corner of the Isle of Wight, just outside Freshwater, where ancient trees create a proper cathedral of green. Backet's Copse isn't much more than a patch of old forest, but it's exactly the sort of place kids love for impromptu adventures and adults appreciate for a quiet walk away from the coastal crowds.

The paths wind through fairly typical English woodland - nothing spectacular, but lovely enough if you're after some shade on a hot day or fancy a bit of forest bathing. It's the kind of spot that works well for families staying at nearby Tapnell Farm Holiday Destination or Tom's Eco Lodge, especially when the children need burning off before lunch.

Don't expect waymarked trails or visitor facilities - this is just woodland being woodland. Twenty minutes to half an hour will see you through it properly, though you could easily stretch that if you're in no hurry. The trees are mature enough to provide decent cover, and there's usually something to spot if you've got young naturalists in tow.

Best treated as a quick detour rather than a destination in itself. Works well combined with a trip into Freshwater or as a gentle warm-up before tackling the coastal walks nearby.
