Dickmont Law

The walk up Dickmont Law takes you out of Arbroath and into proper hill country proper quick. It's not a long slog - maybe forty minutes to the top if you're moving at a decent pace - but the climb is steep enough to remind your legs you're doing actual exercise.

What you get for your effort is a 1,050-foot summit with views that stretch across Angus towards the Sidlaws. On a clear day you can see miles inland; on a grey one, which is frequent round these parts, the mist rolls in and suddenly you're walking through cloud. Both have their charm, to be honest.

Walkers will find this worthwhile, especially as a warm-up hike if you're staying in the area. Families with kids aged eight upwards will manage it fine, though younger ones might find the gradient a bit much. The path is well-trodden and obvious - no scrambling or technical bits. Allow an hour and a half return if you're taking photos and catching your breath at the top.

It's free, naturally, being a Scottish hill. The nearest proper facilities are back in Arbroath, so bring water and a snack. If you're based at The Grange Glamping just down the road, this makes a cracking morning outing before you head back for lunch. Nothing fancy, but honest hillwalking that delivers the goods without faffing about.
