Dickerson's Pit

A former gravel pit turned water, Dickerson's Pit sits quietly on the Cambridgeshire flatlands east of Cambridge. It's the sort of place locals know about and tourists tend to miss - which is precisely why it's worth stopping by if you're in the area.

The pit itself is now a proper lake, ringed by reedy margins and favoured by anglers and birdwatchers in equal measure. The water sits dark and still, reflecting the big Fenland sky. There's a walking circuit around it that takes the better part of an hour - nothing strenuous, just straightforward flat terrain. You'll see wildfowl, the occasional heron, and if you're lucky, some of the rarer warblers that pass through come spring migration.

It's not a spectacle. Don't come expecting drama or a visitor centre with gift shops. What you get instead is space and quiet - both in short supply around Cambridge itself. Families with young kids might manage 30 minutes before restlessness sets in, but serious walkers and birdwatchers could happily lose an afternoon here.

Parking and access details aren't entirely clear online, so ring ahead or check locally in Cambridge before you head out. The pit pairs well with a longer Cambridgeshire loop - Chittering Park and Fen End Farm are both within five miles and offer the kind of base where you'd spend several days exploring the Fens. Hempsall Farm's vegan glamping is slightly further but worth the extra distance if that's your style.

Come for the solitude, not the spectacle.
