Devonshaw Hill

The walk up Devonshaw Hill takes about forty minutes from the carpark, and it's one of those proper straightforward climbs that rewards you without requiring technical gear or a dawn start. You're rewarded with views across the South Lanarkshire moorland that stretch for miles on a clear day - the kind of vista that makes you understand why people come back to the Lowlands repeatedly.

It's a hill walk rather than a fell walk, which means families with teenagers will manage it fine, though younger kids might find the last section a bit steep. The summit itself is unremarkable - no trig point, no shelter - but that's rather the appeal. You get the sense of having earned something real rather than ticked a box. The ground underfoot is rough grass and heather, so waterproof boots are non-negotiable.

Near Biggar, it sits handily for a caravan holiday, especially if you're based at Mount View Caravan Park just a few miles away. The walk takes roughly two hours total including a slow descent, so it works well as a morning outing before heading into town for lunch. On weekends it can get a bit busy with locals, but midweek you'll likely have the summit to yourself. Go when the wind is light - exposed moorland has a habit of turning a pleasant stroll into something altogether more testing.
