Dersingham Bog

Dersingham Bog isn't going to blow your mind, but it's worth an hour if you're camped nearby or passing through King's Lynn way. It's a proper Norfolk wetland - flat, boggy, and home to some specialist plants and birds that you won't find on your average country walk. The ground squelches underfoot after rain, which kids find either brilliant or utterly tedious depending on their mood.

You're really here for the ecology rather than a view. Bog specialists will appreciate the sphagnum mosses and rare plants; birdwatchers can spot curlew and snipe if they're patient. There's a walking route through the reserve that takes the better part of an hour without rushing. It's free to access, though there's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of - bring a map and go in with realistic expectations.

The bog works well as a half-morning break if you're based at Sandringham Camping and Caravanning Club Site or Pinecones, both just over a mile away. Don't plan your Norfolk holiday around it. But if you've got kids who like getting muddy or you're keen on wetland wildlife, it fills a gap between beach days and bigger attractions. Spring's probably your best bet - things are more active, and the ground's drier than winter. Honestly, it's the sort of place that appeals to a specific crowd rather than everyone.
