Dering Wood

Dense woodland flanking the outskirts of Ashford, Dering Wood is the sort of place you stumble into rather than plan for - which is precisely why it works so well. The trees here are proper thick, blocking out most of the sky, and the paths wind through beech and oak that look like they've been standing for centuries.

It's walkers' territory, honestly. The undergrowth stays manageable even in winter, and there are enough interlinked trails to spend a solid couple of hours without retracing your steps. Families with older kids will find it engaging; younger ones might flag after forty minutes of uneven ground. The forest floor can get boggy after rain, so waterproof boots aren't optional in wet seasons.

No facilities that we could spot, and admission appears free - it's the sort of accessible woodland that doesn't announce itself. Allow two to three hours if you're being thorough, less if you just fancy a quick circuit.

If you're staying at Go Glamp nearby, it's an easy morning walk without needing the car. Chegworth Mill Glamping, further out, makes it less convenient but still doable as part of a broader ramble around the Ashford area. The wood pairs nicely with exploring the town itself rather than serving as a standalone destination. Worth the detour if you're already in the region and want some genuine woodland breathing space rather than manicured parkland.
