Denham Lake (Pit 3)

Denham Lake is one of those places that catches you off guard if you're staying nearby in Uxbridge. It's a proper working gravel pit that's been transformed into a fishing lake, and while that might not sound thrilling, the walk around it is genuinely pleasant. The water's clear enough on a decent day, and you'll spot anglers dotted along the banks - it's become something of a local secret among the fishing crowd.

The main appeal here is the straightforward circuit walk. It takes the best part of an hour if you're not dawdling, and the path is well-maintained without being overly manicured. The surrounding woodland softens what could otherwise feel a bit industrial, and there's a decent chance of spotting waterfowl if you're quiet about it. Families with younger kids might find it a bit limited - there's no playground, no café, just the walk itself.

If you're camped at Highclere just down the road, this makes an easy morning outing. It won't blow your mind, but it's the sort of place that fills a gap between bigger days out. Bring binoculars if you're into birdwatching; otherwise, it's a decent leg-stretch before heading somewhere with more obvious attractions. Free to access, as far as we could tell, and it gets quieter during weekday mornings if you can manage that.
