Delnies Community Woodland

A small wooded area just outside Nairn where you can actually sit down without fighting crowds. Delnies Community Woodland is the kind of spot locals know about and visitors stumble upon by accident - which is rather the point.

The woodland itself is modest but genuine. There are paths winding through mature trees, spots to stop and eat a sandwich, and enough space to let kids burn off some energy without them vanishing into the undergrowth entirely. It's not dramatic scenery - no lochs, no peaks - but it's peaceful in a way that feels earned rather than manufactured.

This works best as a break during a wider Highland trip, not a destination in itself. Park up for an hour, stretch your legs, have a picnic. If you're based at Barrow Campsite Nairn or Fortrose Bay - both solid options - Delnies makes a low-key morning outing. Free to visit, no facilities to speak of, so bring what you need. Best in dry weather when the paths aren't muddy. Go when the midges aren't biting, which means avoid late summer evenings. It's reliable rather than remarkable - and sometimes that's exactly what a day out needs.
