Deer Park Recreational Ground

The fields at Deer Park feel genuinely wild despite being within walking distance of Witney. You're after proper woodland walks and open grassland where red and fallow deer roam freely - which is the whole point, really. The reserve sprawls across decent acreage, and on a quiet morning you'll spot the herds grazing in the meadows, though they're skittish so don't expect to get close. There's good hedgerow spotting too if birds are your thing.

It works brilliantly as a half-day outing if you're based at Wysdom Touring Park or the Burford Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite nearby. Families with young walkers will find it manageable - no steep terrain, just soft paths that can get muddy after rain. Older kids might find an hour enough unless they're genuinely into wildlife watching. If you're staying for a week, couple it with the woodland trails around the area rather than treating it as a full-day destination.

Bring binoculars and stay quiet. The deer are the main event, and patience pays off. Spring and early summer are your best bet for seeing them active in the open. Admission appears to be free, which is decent value for a local nature spot that doesn't pretend to be more than it is.
