Deep History Coast

The cliffs along this stretch of Norfolk coast tell a geological story that goes back 2.5 million years. Walk along the shore east of Norwich and you're literally treading through time - the exposed layers of clay, sand and flint show the landscape's transformation from tropical swamps to ice age tundra to what you see today. It's proper mesmerizing if you're into that sort of thing, though I'll be honest: if you're expecting dramatic white cliffs like Dover, you'll be disappointed. These are crumbly, fragile things, and the sea's eating away at them year after year.

Geologists and serious nature enthusiasts will have a field day here. The reserve itself protects important habitats for birds and rare plants - bring binoculars in winter for migrating species. The walking is straightforward enough along the beach, though the cliffs themselves are unstable so stick to the shore. Allow a couple of hours minimum if you want to really look at the rock formations and spot fossils. Kids might manage half an hour before the novelty wears off, unless they're already fossil hunters.

Based near the caravan parks around Manor and Golden Beach, this works well as a half-day excursion during a Norfolk break. It's free to access, though you'll need to sort your own parking. Tide times matter - check before you go, as the beach narrows considerably at high water. Best visited in calmer weather; on a grey, blustery day the place can feel rather bleak.
