Dedham River Trail

The Dedham River Trail follows the Dedham Vale stretch of the River Stour between Dedham and Stratford St Mary - proper flat walking country that Constable himself painted repeatedly. You're essentially tracing the route through the landscape that made the artist's name, with willows hanging over the water and meadows rolling back from the banks.

It's a gentle 3-mile ramble one way, so you can do the whole thing out and back in a leisurely afternoon or pick a shorter section. The ground is mostly dry underfoot, though it gets boggy after rain near the river. The walk itself is unremarkable - no dramatic vistas or ruins - but there's something deeply satisfying about seeing exactly what Constable saw. The light changes across the water the same way it did two centuries ago.

Historians and Constable fans will get proper value here. Kids might flag after the first mile unless they're keen on spotting wildlife - herons are common, and dragonflies thick in summer. It's free and you can start from Dedham's car park.

Strangers Holiday Park sits just 5.5 miles away near Colchester, making this an easy morning walk from a base there. Polstead Country Park, rated higher, is 6 miles distant and works well as part of a broader Dedham Vale exploring trip. The trail connects genuinely to the area's character rather than feeling bolted-on for tourists. Worth doing if you're spending time locally, but don't travel far just for this.
