Decoy Country Park

The lakes at Decoy Country Park are what draw you in first - proper peaceful for somewhere so close to Paignton's seafront chaos. It's a working nature reserve that doesn't feel like it's been over-managed or roped off for visitors, which makes a change. You get woodland trails looping around the water, good birdwatching if you're patient, and the kind of quiet where you can actually hear yourself think.

It's the sort of place where walkers and nature types will spend a decent couple of hours without getting bored. Families with young kids will find it manageable - nothing too strenuous, and there's water to watch which keeps them occupied. In winter and spring the bird populations are strongest, so time it right if that's your thing. Summer can get a bit warm on the exposed bits.

Access details are thin on the ground, but it's free to wander around, which is always appreciated. Plan for an hour minimum, longer if you're serious about spotting things or just want to sit by the water and decompress.

Stay nearby at Dornafield or The Smithy glamping pods - both within spitting distance - and you've got the perfect low-key morning sorted before heading into Paignton proper for lunch. It's the opposite of the tourist treadmill, and that's precisely why it works. Not spectacular, but genuinely restorative.
