Deal Pier

Walking out onto Deal Pier feels like stepping back into Victorian seaside Britain - all ornate ironwork, creaking boards, and that particular smell of salt and old wood. Built in 1864, it's one of the last remaining pleasure piers of that era, stretching 1,026 feet into the Channel with genuine character.

You can stroll the full length without paying anything, which is the main reason to come. The views back towards Deal itself are proper lovely, especially on a clear day when you can see right along the coast. There's a small arcade and a cafe at the far end if you fancy a cuppa or an ice cream, but honestly the real appeal is just being out there - watching the water, spotting boats, maybe a few anglers if the fishing's on.

It's not dramatic or trendy. It won't blow your mind. But if you're the sort who appreciates old seaside infrastructure and don't mind a gentle walk without much fanfare, you'll get something from it. Kids under eight might find it a bit dull after twenty minutes unless they're into fishing. Older children and adults who like a bit of maritime history will do fine.

Stay at one of the nearby parks - Kingsdown Camping or Ham Hideaway Glamping are both close - and you've got Deal town itself on your doorstep with its vintage shops and seafront. The pier takes about 30 minutes to walk properly, longer if you linger. Go when it's not howling a gale, or at least expect to grip the railings.
