Deadman's Hill

The highest point in Cambridgeshire at 128 metres sounds grander than it actually is, but that's rather the charm of Deadman's Hill. East of Baldock, this modest rise offers proper views across the flat Cambridgeshire countryside - rolling fields, hedgerows, and on a clear day, enough horizon to remind you why the Fens matter. It's not a dramatic peak by any stretch. The name itself suggests something darker, though the real origin is probably just Saxon or medieval - one of those landscape features that sounded ominous enough to stick around for a thousand years.

Walkers and cycle tourists make up most visitors. The climb takes ten minutes, fifteen if you're taking it easy. There's a sense of accomplishment that's entirely disproportionate to the effort, which makes it brilliant for families with younger children or anyone after a gentle leg-stretcher without the commitment of a proper hill walk. The views reward you immediately - you can see back towards Baldock and across the Hitchin hills to the south.

It's free access, obviously. Allow thirty minutes total if you're stopping for photos and a breather. The real value is combining it with a park holiday based at Ashridge Farm or Baldock Park Homes nearby - neither spectacular, but decent bases for exploring this unglamorous corner of England. Come here for the walk, the perspective, and the satisfaction of standing at the highest point in a county that most people assume is completely flat. It deserves your detour.
