Ashwell Village Museum

The museum occupies a converted schoolhouse right in the heart of Ashwell village, just outside Baldock. It's a modest affair, but that's rather the point - this is local history done properly, by locals who actually care about the place. You'll find Roman pottery, medieval graffiti carved into the church tower (genuinely fascinating stuff), and documents that tell the story of a village that's been around far longer than most people realise.

Walking through the rooms takes about an hour if you read everything, half that if you just browse. The volunteer guides are the real draw here - they know the village inside out and will happily spend time explaining why a particular flint scraper matters or what life was actually like during the plague. It's the kind of museum where you leave knowing something you didn't before, rather than just having looked at old things.

Families with older kids will get more from it than families with toddlers. History enthusiasts absolutely should make the detour. If you're camping nearby at Ashridge Farm or Radwell Lake, it's worth an hour of your morning. Check ahead before you visit though - opening hours can be limited, and admission details aren't always clear from a distance.
