Deadman Wood

The name alone stops you in your tracks - Deadman Wood sounds like the sort of place you'd stumble into in a Gothic novel rather than a Kent woodland. In reality, it's a proper working forest near Aylesford, dense with tall trees and the kind of quiet that makes you forget you're in the South East at all.

You'll find yourself on unmarked trails threading through mature timber, with enough space to walk for hours without seeing another soul. It's the real deal for serious woodland walkers - not a manicured country estate, but actual forest. The ground can get boggy depending on the season, so decent boots matter. There's no visitor centre, no cafe, no interpretation boards. What you get is peace and genuine nature.

Families with older kids will manage fine here; younger ones might lose interest without a specific destination in sight. History buffs should know the name has proper roots - this isn't modern invention - though the stories vary depending who you ask locally. Photographers love the light filtering through the canopy, especially on overcast days.

The nearest campgrounds are within striking distance. River View Camping is under five miles away and sits right beside the Medway, which works well if you want mixed woodland and water. Glamping @ Rankins Farm is further but offers something different if you're after a bit more comfort.

Allow at least two hours to make it worthwhile. Winter's actually best - you can navigate more easily and see further through the bare branches. It's free to access, assuming no permissions have changed recently.
