Dayhole Dene

The woodland track down into Dayhole Dene arrives suddenly - one moment you're on the ridge near Stocksfield, the next you're dropping into a proper deep-cut ravine with the burn running at the bottom. It's a short walk but a steep one, and the trees close in immediately, creating this intimate feeling despite being within striking distance of the road.

What makes it worth the trip is the geological drama. The burn has carved through sandstone and shale, leaving exposed faces that geologists love but which also just look dramatic in a quiet way. The dene itself is narrow enough that you feel almost enclosed, with overhanging branches and mossy banks pressing in. In winter it can be wet and slippery underfoot - proper care needed.

This isn't a destination for long rambles. You're looking at maybe 45 minutes to an hour if you head down, potter about, and come back out. Kids might find the burn interesting for a bit, but there's not much to occupy them beyond that. Walkers doing a longer route through the Tyne Valley would benefit more - it breaks up the terrain nicely and gives you somewhere different to look at.

If you're based at Valley View Camping a few miles away, Dayhole Dene works as a morning expedition rather than your main event. Free to visit, no facilities, and best when it's dry. The sandstone colours are richer after rain, mind you, even if the path's more treacherous.
